Chapter Eighteen

Nicco

From the look on Chad and Franki’s faces it’s obvious Josh must have told them that he’s leaving Dallas and the band. It’s clearly not what Grayson requested that we keep quiet and tell no one.

Was Josh listening? Even if he was, I understand why he felt like he had to say goodbye to Chad and Franki.

It crushes me to know how difficult all of this is for him. If I could change it, I would. But Teddy Thompson has escaped and Grayson believes he’s coming for Josh. We’ve got to get out of here. I’ll never let him get his fucking hands on Josh. Ever.

My phone buzzes with a text from Grayson. “I’ve briefed my men, Miller and Davis about what we discussed. When are you and Josh leaving the wake?”

“In an few minutes,” I text back.

“Good. Miller and Davis are in a black Ford Taurus. They’ll follow you back to the apartment.”

“Thanks.”

“Just keep him safe.”

“I will.” I’m surprised at my turnaround with Grayson.

At first I thought he was a total jerk, but now I know he was keeping Josh safe. Is keeping Josh safe. It’s clear how much Grayson cares about him. I’ve picked up on their father-son vibe. No wonder Grayson was so forceful with me on the day we met. He didn’t know me, and Josh hadn’t told him I was moving in. I owe him for keeping Josh safe all these years.

While Chad and Josh continue talking, Franki leaves them and marches my direction. “Nicco, what do you know about this? About Josh moving?”

“I’m sorry, Franki. I can’t tell you. Just know that Josh wouldn’t do this if it weren’t necessary. Please, don’t tell anyone else about this. It’s too important.”

“You’re scaring me. What in the hell is going on? When is he leaving us?”

“We don’t know exactly when is yet, but very soon. A day or two at most.”

“‘We’re leaving?’ Oh, so this about you?” Her tone sharpens like a knife, as Josh and Chad walk up beside her. “What have you done? Did some of your cronies from your past crawl out of their holes looking for you?”

“Franki, stop it,” Josh says. “This is about me, not Nicco.”

“Oh really?” She tilts her head slightly to the side. “Then tell me about his friend Digs that he threatened at the diner.”

“How do you know about that?” I ask.

“Candi and I went there for coffee before we came here for the wake, and Lucy told us all about you and your friend Digs. So? Is that why Josh is ready to run off with you? You need to get away before your old gang shows up to collect on some debts you owe them?”

Josh moves between Franki and I. “I know you’re upset because I sprung this on you without warning, but Nicco has nothing to do with this. I’ve already said too much, but know this, Franki, it is for the best of everyone.”

“For everyone?” Chad asks. “What about you, Josh? Is it really for the best that you leave?”

“Like I said before, I have no choice.
